After roughly 50 years in Écully, emlyon is moving back into the heart of the city, in the Gerland district. emlyon business school (France) is more involved than ever in Lyon's socio-economic life and is consolidating its status as a prime stakeholder and hub of student life in its original territory. Gerland is at once a local, national and international crossroads, presented as a blank page on which to write a new chapter of emlyon.
With its Confluences 2025 strategic plan, emlyon has set out to become one of the top 15 Global Business Universities in Europe by 2025. On its way towards achieving this goal, the school has also become a société à mission and assumed its role of working in the general interest. This vision of a committed and innovative school will be embodied in the very shape given to emlyon.
Sustainable
The aim is to make emlyon's new campus an environmentally-exemplary project that embodies the school's commitment. It meets today's highest standards in sustainable construction and is aiming for certification to the HQE Excellent, BREEAM Very Good and OsmoZ standards. emlyon's new campus is an eco-friendly building that incorporates environmental responsibility into every aspect of its operation. It is connected to the metropolitan area's urban heating network, which is one of France's foremost green networks, and it has solar panels on the roof to contribute towards producing sustainable electricity. It also has a natural cooling system instead of air conditioning. To address the impact of the travel it generates, the school has built environmentally-friendly means of transport into its design, achieving remarkable accessibility by bike and public transport on the B metro line, tram line 1, various bus lines, the Jean Macé train station, parking for 400 bikes and no car parking except for disabled parking...
Connected
To make the user experience as smooth and easy as possible, emlyon's new campus has also been designed from a digital viewpoint. It will be a smart building, equipped with an information-gathering tool to optimise its consumption and management. Over and above the building itself, the connectivity of emlyon's new campus will be embodied in its facilities and its operating principles. As far as its teaching is concerned, emlyon aims to deliver 20% of its courses online and is equipping its future campus accordingly to help the faculty deliver high-quality distance teaching. With regard to its internal operation, it has incorporated the new modes of connected working and will operate on a flex-office principle in the best possible conditions of well-being at work. Lastly, the flagship venues of the new campus, such as the library and the makers' lab, have been designed to accommodate next-generation hybrid tools and principles, in keeping with the ambitions of a Global Business University.
Living
The campus has been designed as a living framework, at once open and constantly changing in step with requirements and its users. Adaptability – whether in the equipment and facilities, the furniture or the use of space – is one of the main criteria for the design of the new campus. Accordingly, it allows for the broadest possible range of uses for each of its spaces. The beating heart of the campus is the central area situated on the ground level. It is the most eloquent example of this philosophy: it is a passageway, a relaxation point, a gathering place, and an event venue... The campus also adapts to different types of users and is fundamentally open and accessible to them. The base of the building opens out directly onto the surrounding district, either by the street that runs through it or its services, which are open to the community at large: a baker's shop, a brasserie, a library open to all students studying in Lyon, a fablab open to all makers, etc. emlyon's new campus is a real nodal point at the centre of its district.
An educational promise
By returning to the centre of Lyon, emlyon is reclaiming its position at the crossroads of intellectual, scientific, economic and community exchanges. The future campus is designed to be a propitious setting for producing shared knowledge, developing hybrid skills, sustainable innovation, and dynamic meetings, in short, a growth hub. It is a gathering place in which the early makers signature teaching model comes to life: where thought and action are woven together.
